Switch Chocobo GP

Square Enix has revealed that upcoming kart racer Chocobo GP will feature at least 20 characters to choose from when it comes to Switch next year.

The news was announced by the game’s director Akihiko Maeda during the company’s panel at this year’s Tokyo Game Show; Maeda noted that the characters will be revealed at a later date, but didn’t specify whether the 20+ options would be available at launch or over time through DLC (thanks, Siliconera).

The presentation also touched upon the game’s mechanics, including character-specific abilities you’ll be able to use and the appearance of magic spells like Aero, Fira, Doom, and MBarrier. When a player opts to use one of these spells on-track, a marker will appear over their head, giving nearby opponents a quick warning to try and get out of the way of any incoming danger.

Start your engines and get set for a new racing experience, featuring a roster of dozens of your favorite Chocobo characters, complete with their own unique abilities and variants. Equip Magicites and take out the competition as you drift through various familiar courses in online and offline multiplayer modes. Compete in tournaments and become the reigning champion of GP!

You can rewatch the game’s Mario Kart-like announcement trailer here if you missed it, and plenty more footage was also shared over the course of TGS.
