CD Projekt has acquired US-based studio The Molasses Flood. The developer will be working with the publisher to create its own project based on an existing CD Projekt IP. More details are promised for the future. It’s unknown if this is referring to The Witcher or Cyberpunk.

When Irrational Games was closed in 2014, The Molasses Flood was one of the studios formed in its wake. Not only have its members worked on the BioShock franchise, they’ve worked on renowned series like Halo, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band. The team at Molasses Flood is specifically known for making survival and base-building games such as The Flame in the Flood and Drake Hollow.

The Molasses Flood will remain a separate studio and will not be merged into any of CD Projekt’s existing teams. The team is currently recruiting for a few positions, but the job listings have been carefully worded not to give anything away about their current project, which is an unspecified project based on one of CD Projekt’s existing IPs. CD Projekt has previously said it would be focusing attention on both The Witcher and Cyberpunk franchises moving forwards, but this doesn’t guarantee the project is part of this plan.

Back in March, CD Projekt implied it would be looking at future acquisitions and mergers to increase future output. In July the company confirmed it had completed the acquisition of Digital Scapes, who helped with the development of Cyberpunk 2077. The Molasses Flood is the second such acquisition. Molasses Flood Studio Head Forrest Dowling said:

From the inception of The Molasses Flood, it was our goal to create games that touch and inspire peopled. When CD PROJEKT approached us about the possibility of working together, we saw an incredible opportunity to reach a much wider audience through a collaboration with a company we love, creating games in worlds we love. We could not be more excited to continue our mission with the support of CD PROJEKT and their incredibly talented team.

As always, we’ll be sure to bring you the news on The Molasses Flood’s new project as soon as we hear more.
