Think of a rhythm-based music game and immediately you’ll usher up memories of the classics: Rock Band, Guitar Hero, PaRappa the Rappa. A Musical Story promises to let you create similar memories, although this one is most definitely different.

Created by Glee-Cheese Studio (this is their debut title no less) and pushed to market by Digerati, A Musical Story is a new type of rhythm game; one that takes an innovative approach to the genre as it puts full emphasis on the player actually listening to the music, instead of just following visual prompts.

It’s priced at £12.49 from the Xbox Store, and that will see you able to download the game on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. With Smart Delivery in tow, and full Series X|S optimisation too, you can be sure you’ll be playing the very best version of the game possible. Expect to pay roughly that price on PS4, PS5, Switch and PC too (maybe even on iOS and Android as well). Unless you decide to pick up the Deluxe Edition that is available on PC and Mac, with that including the official soundtrack, a digital artbook and wallpapers.

However you download the game, you’ll find the opportunity to head back to the 1970s as A Musical Story takes us on a psychedelic trip through a musical experience, pushed along by the folk rock soundtrack and delivered via a delightful art style.

It focuses on a young man – Gabriel – as he looks to come to terms with the situation at hand, attempting to build connections with others through his musical memories. It tasks you with following the rhythm, hitting the beats and nailing the tunes, opening up new chapters of Gabriel’s life as you find success.

The key features you need to worry about include:

  • Rekindle Gabriel’s memories with rhythmic button presses in time with the music
  • Storytelling without words – discover Gabriel’s journey through music and visuals alone
  • Gabriel’s story comes to life through a beautifully crafted art style created by Alexandre Rey
  • A unique original soundtrack featuring 26 songs, composed and performed by Charles Bardin and Valentin Ducloux
  • Play every song perfectly to unlock a hidden chapter

We’ve been hands on with A Musical Story on Xbox Series X|S and would highly advise you give our full review a little bit of a read.

Once you’re sold, get over to the Xbox Store, the PlayStation Store, the Nintendo eShop, or the digital stores of PC, iOS or Android.
