Robert Malinowski, the global communication director for CD Projekt Red, has confirmed that the image of the necklace used to tease the upcoming The Witcher 4 game (though that’s not the official title) is actually a lynx. As such, The Witcher 4 lynx medallion rules out and narrows down some of the speculation regarding what the “new saga” will be for the next Witcher game.

The Witcher 4 lynx medallion confirmed by CD Projekt Red

In a statement to Eurogamer, Malinowski confirmed that he didn’t want fans to be confused about what animal the medallion is supposed to represent:

“Okay, some mysteries should not be so mysterious. I can confirm that the medallion is, in fact, shaped after a lynx.”

Such as it is, this Lynx necklace likely means that it’s tied to a specific branch of the Witcher organization ostensibly called the School of the Lynx. While this school doesn’t exist in the canon of the books by fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski, this isn’t the first time that the games have created new Schools like those of the Bear, Crane, and Manticore.

The Witcher 4 Lynx Necklace Medallion Ciri Theory

The School of the Lynx actually does exist but only in a popular Witcher fan fiction written by Lambert and Keira Metz. It’s unclear whether this usage then is a subtle reference to the fan-created work or a complete coincidence. Some fans speculate that Ciri may have a part in the next saga because she wears a pendant belonging to the School of the Cat (pictured above), and the lynx is of course a species of cat.

That said, basing The Witcher 4 on a completely new School would make it easier for the game to allow players to create their own Witcher character. Given CD Projekt Red’s past titles like Cyberpunk 2077, having a customizable protagonist wouldn’t be out of step for the developer.

In other news, Sony has hinted at the release date for PS5 VRR, and Sony has promised that they will be continuing making single-player games alongside live-service experiences.
