Sony revealed a list of all of the current and upcoming games with which they have marketing deals and there were a couple of surprises on there. The first was the appearance of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, implying there may be some form of exclusive content coming for PS5 consoles. The second was the absence of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
A deal for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
This is the first time we’ve heard of a marketing deal between Sony and Ubisoft for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Other games included in the list revealed during Sony’s latest strategy briefing (thanks Reddit) were PS5 timed-exclusives Forspoken, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Deathloop, as well as console-exclusive titles Genshin Impact and Final Fantasy XVI. Grand Theft Auto V had a deal to offer its GTA Online mode for free for a set period of time for PS5 players. In terms of NBA 2K and FIFA, the PS5 is the official console of the NBA 2K League and FIFA 22 Global Series professional esports events, as well as online tournaments for all players.
Seeing as Avatar is a single-player game and is releasing on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Google Stadia, Amazon Luna, and PC (therefore it’s not a console exclusive), it makes more sense for the marketing deal to include exclusive content for Playstation players than it does for any other purpose. The game is due to be released sometime before March 2023 although little has been said about it since its reveal last year.
A game that was conspicuously absent was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Despite Activision’s impending acquisition by Microsoft, it was believed there was still a marketing agreement in place between Activision and Sony for exclusive Call of Duty content on PlayStation consoles. It seems like this may not be the case after all.
In other news, Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown has been delayed and will no longer be released on PS4. Elsewhere, The Last of Us Remake is rumored to be appearing during the upcoming holiday season.
