Ron Gilbert, the creator behind the Monkey Island franchise and writer on the upcoming Return to Monkey Island, has seemingly shut down his blog after instances of personal attacks from commenters. The website domain https://grumpygamer.com currently fails to load at the time of writing.

As reported by VGC, Gilbert posted a message decrying the personal attacks, stating that “people are just being mean” and that “the joy of sharing has been driven from me”, confirming that he won’t be posting anymore updates about the game. This was screen grabbed by Dominic Armato, the voice behind Monkey Island protagonist Guybrush Threepwood, and posted on Twitter (mind the language here!):

Armato then offers up his own opinion on the backlash from fans:

In a previous blog post, Gilbert stated that the comments being made by certain people had made him “sad”, and he expressed the irony that “the people who don’t want me to make the game I want to make are some of the hard core Monkey Island fans”.

We’re personally saddened by this turn of events and we’d hope that our community will join us in wishing the team the very best and express our absolute joy in the news that Return to Monkey Island will be coming to Switch this year.
