Chances are that if you’ve spent some time trawling through the Game Pass library in recent years, you’d have come across Grounded, the ‘Honey I Shrunk the Kids’ equivalent of a survival-adventure title. Whilst you may have been put off by the ‘Game Preview’ title that loomed over it, worry no more, as today Grounded gets its full launch.

Releasing today onto Xbox, Game Pass and PC, Grounded tells the tale of a group of kids who are unfortunate enough to be shrunk down to near-molecular scale. Okay, perhaps it’s not molecular, but when you have ants towering over you, and the smallest of house spiders becoming some of the most terrifying entities in gaming, you can bet your bottom dollar that you are very small indeed.

You and up to three online buddies have been thrown into the back garden, and simply have to survive, all the while uncovering some of the secrets surrounding your shrinking, and the mishaps behind it. Whilst survival may at first consist of gathering a few tiny twigs and the like to fashion swords out of, soon enough you’ll need a home, and that’s where Grounded’s in-depth base building system comes into play.

Whatever you require – be it weapons or building resources – you’ll need to get out into the big bad world and scavenge for resources, going on to fashion your tools via a crafting menu. It’s all classic survival game stuff, seeing you constantly managing your base and weapons, all the while preparing for combat by eating food, buffing up your character.

And it’s perhaps combat where Grounded can show off its uniqueness. Something as small as an ant or a tiny bug can spell doom for you and your buddies, what with the small people and whatnot. It is therefore essential to learn attack patterns of each enemy type, and prepare accordingly. What’s more, the insect life around the garden will react to your actions, shaping future encounters with the creepy crawlies.

Grounded is out of Preview and dropping in via Version 1.0 edition on the Xbox Store for £34.99. it  is also available for free on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, provided you own a Game Pass subscription. The game can also be found on PC marketplaces such as Steam.
