Just yesterday, God of War Ragnarok beat Elden Ring in the PS Blog Game of the Year awards, but it seems like both lost out to Gran Turismo 7 in terms of sales in Japan. While the sales figures only represented physical sales, Gran Turismo 7 managed more copies sold than the other two games put together.

Gran Turismo 7 reigned supreme in Japan

Gran Turismo 7 was by far the most popular game in Japan based on physical sales, shifting approximately 198,000 units according to weekly sales figures from Famitsu, which were compiled by Teiten Game and translated by Genki_JPN on Twitter. Second in the list was Elden Ring with around 127,000 copies sold, while God of War Ragnarok can be found in eighth position with approximate sales of just 45,000. The full top ten list is below:

  1. Gran Turismo 7 – 198,369
  2. Elden Ring – 127,664
  3. Horizon Forbidden West – 116,777
  4. Resident Evil Village – 74,644
  5. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – 66,238
  6. Tales of Arise – 65,292
  7. Demon’s Souls – 58,661
  8. God of War Ragnarok – 45,159
  9. Lost Judgment – 42,743
  10. Dragon Quest X Offline – 34,616

Other interesting facts to come out of the list were that Battlefield 2042 beat Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, while Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War also managed to grab a spot in the top 20. For PS4, Monster Hunter World was the most popular game, with Elden Ring just managing to scrape in at 20th place and neither Gran Turismo 7 nor God of War Ragnarok to be seen anywhere.
