It looks like Baldur’s Gate 3 may well be a timed console exclusive on PS5, because the Xbox version of the game is facing some “technical issues.” This comes from developer Larian Studios, who has explained why the game was announced for PS5 yesterday during the PlayStation State of Play without any word elsewhere on an Xbox Series X and S version.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is not intentionally a timed PS5 console exclusive

In a statement on the official Baldur’s Gate 3 Reddit, community manager Molly Carroll reveals what’s going on with the Xbox version of the game:

We’ve had an Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 in the works for some time, but we have run into some technical issues – particularly with split-screen co-op. We are still working on an Xbox version of BG3, but we’re not yet confident enough to announce it.

The statement continues: “There’s no platform exclusivity preventing us from releasing BG3 on Xbox day and date, should that be a technical possibility.”

It’s unclear what’s causing the technical hiccup on Xbox Series consoles, though it could stem from split-screen co-op having to satisfy the hardware specs of the lower-end Xbox Series S. At any rate, it looks like PS5 release date of August 31, 2023 is solid.

Baldur’s Gate 3 will not release on PS4, making it a current-gen exclusive. A collector’s edition of the game is currently available for purchase for PS5 and PC. It was previously thought that BG3 would be a PC exclusive.
