The end of the financial year is looming and Electronic Arts has released an update on how they plan to move forward with their business next year. The bad news is that EA will be restructuring and there will be lay offs affecting “approximately six percent” of the workforce, which works out at around 750 employees.

Projects have seemingly been canceled too

EA CEO Andrew Wilson explained that the publisher is “moving away from projects that do not contribute to our strategy, reviewing our real estate footprint, and restructuring some of our teams.” Reading between the lines, it seems like some games may have been canceled too, although nothing has been confirmed.

Recent rumors claimed a single-player Apex Legends game had been canceled, while mobile versions of Battlefield and Apex Legends were officially halted at the end of January. The future of the Madden franchise hinges entirely on Madden NFL 24, while servers are closing for some older Battlefield games.

Employees from canceled projects are likely the ones that find themselves part of the 750 EA lay offs. Colleagues that have been removed from projects will get the opportunity to “transition onto other projects”, but there will be layoffs where that isn’t possible. While Wilson went on to say they were treating the process with “utmost care and respect,” the sentiment fell a bit flat after he also stated that EA is “operating from a position of strength” and “our business is gaining momentum.”
