Original Article from 17th April 2023…

If it’s Yu-Gi-Oh! you like then this August will see you right, as the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship (WCS) 2023 kicks off.

Konami have today fully detailed and dated the upcoming World Championships for Yu-Gi-Oh! as the prestigious card game runs into tournament fashion, allowing Duelists to go up against each other in order to prove themselves as best in the world.

It’ll take place on August 5th-6th at the Tokyo Big Sight (Tokyo International Exhibition Centre) in Japan, taking place for the first time since back in 2019 – we’re blaming a global pandemic for that.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2023 will comprise of three separate tournaments, focusing on the Yu-Gi-Oh! official card game, on Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links and now also for Yu-Gi-Oh! MASTER DUEL – a game that we quite liked when it released on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC for free a year or so ago.

In fact, we reviewed Yu-Gi-Oh! MASTER DUEL and dropped a 3.5/5 score on it, hyping the great cards and deckbuilding opportunities, along with the well-worked single player affair. We did find the online world to be a bit brutal – but perhaps that was down to our skills more than anything.

That online world promises to be nothing when you compare it to those playing through the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship. The format will run as a Team Battle affair first, as eight teams are formed from the strongest qualifying Duelists, before battling it out in the finals. Before that though, the qualifiers will take place, beginning on May 16th and running as…

  • Yu-Gi-Oh! MASTER DUEL 1st Stage – 12:00, 16 May – 11:59, 29 May (UTC+8)
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! MASTER DUEL Regional Qualifiers – 13:00 26 May – 11:59, 29 May (UTC+8)
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! DUEL LINKS 1st Stage – 15:30, 30 May – 12:59, 12 June (UTC+8)
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! DUEL LINKS Regional Qualifiers – 13:00, 9 June – 12:59, 12 June (UTC+8)

The final stages of the Yu-Gi-Oh! WCS 2023 qualification process for the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG will take place this summer, with qualifying Duelists invited to championships in Europe and Oceania. The Yu-Gi-Oh! European Championship is now confirmed for 30 June-2 July at the Jaarbeurs exhibition centre in Utrecht, Netherlands.

If you haven’t yet played Yu-Gi-Oh! MASTER DUEL, we’d urge you to head to the Xbox Store and grab a free download of the game, playing on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It’s also on the stores of other formats – PlayStation, Switch and PC. It’s free to download and play, so what could go wrong!?
