It’s clear Astro Bot is a future PS5 classic. The critically acclaimed platformer celebrated PlayStation’s long history in fun and exciting ways. It’s no surprise, then, that Sony considers it a hit.

Astro Bot sells over 1.5 million copies in 9 weeks

As seen in Sony’s financial results, Team Asobi’s Astro Bot sold over 1.5 million copies in the nine weeks since its September 6, 2024, release date. Not only did it sell well, 37% of the people who purchased the game had not purchased a first-party PlayStation title in the last two years. The family friendly nature of the game led to more younger age groups and families purchasing the game. The results say that those groups specifically were higher than other games, and contributed to widening the platform’s user base.

Astro Bot’s success is proof of Sony’s strength in single-player games. The same document says as much, as the company claims its single-player catalog contain more predictable successes.

“We intend to build an optimal title portfolio during the current midrange plan period that combines single-player games, which are our strength, and which have a higher predictability of becoming hits due to our proven IP, with live service games that pursue upside while taking on a certain amount of risk upon release,” says Sony.

Sony’s success in single-player games isn’t halting any progress in its live service initiative. However, the company does plan to start release a “major” single-player game every year starting with Ghost of Yotei.

As mentioned before, Astro Bot did incredibly well critically. We gave the game a 10. Reviewer Shaan Joshi said, “In a world of by-the-numbers sequels and soulless cash grabs, Astro Bot stands as an oasis, an absolute masterpiece packed to the brim with charm, creativity, and a genuine love for video games, old and new.”
