Sony Group has acknowledged that PlayStation single-player games have a ‘higher predictability of becoming hits’ than its live-service, multiplayer offerings. The company made this statement during a presentation announcing the Group’s financial results for the second quarter of FY2024 (ended September 30, 2024).

PlayStation multiplayer games have been a mixed bag for Sony

Earlier in 2024, Sony released Helldivers 2, which it describes as a “huge hit.” Towards the end of the year, it released the multimillion disaster called Concord, which it ended up having to explain to skateholders today.

“We gained a lot of experience and learned a lot from both,” the company said before conceding that single-player games are PlayStation Studios‘ strength. However, Sony is still planning to take risks in the live service department to increase revenue.

“We intend to build an optimal title portfolio during the current mid-range plan period that combines single-player games — which are our strength and which have a higher predictability of becoming hits due to our proven IP — with live service games that pursue upside while taking on a certain amount of risk upon release,” Sony said.

The company added that it will use the lessons learned from PlayStation Studios’ successes and failures to strengthen video game development and management of the studios.
