Is it possible to play a game totally underwater? Well, Jim and Connor have been assigned a crucial task to prove the feat possible with the help of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, the brand-new game from THQ Nordic out now on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S consoles.

The Cosmic Shake is the latest adventure with SpongeBob and his friends as they explore alternate universes thanks to the haphazard use of magical bubble blowing liquid. As a third-person action adventure game, you’ll be jumping, spinning, slamming, and battling your way through the vibrant world of Bikini Bottom and beyond. What better game to play underwater?

Whether you’re a long-time fan of the cartoon from the good ol’ days, or maybe even a parent with some young SpongeBob fans of your own, this game has a lot to offer. Everyone’s favourite characters have returned as part of the story in SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake: first appearing in Bikini Bottom before popping up across the different worlds you visit.

There’s also a bunch of costumes available for those willing to scour each level for hidden coins. No battle pass, no seasonal content, just a treasure hunt for collectables that opens up a whole universe of references and callbacks for you to enjoy. If you’ve pre-ordered the game, there’s even a selection of DLC costumes available too for the keenest of SpongeBoB fans out there. Missed that pre-order window? You can always grab it post-launch for €9.99/$9.99/£8.99.

The gameplay itself, filled with platforming and combat sections, is fun with a capital F (which as we all know, stands for friends who do stuff together). With a dodge and even a ranged stun at your disposal, there’s more depth to this oceanic action romp than you may have thought. Not too tough, but no joke either. Be sure to keep an eye on your pants while playing to make sure you don’t run out — they’re your lives and are a precious resource just like in real life.

Also, and this might be a genuine surprise to those of you who left Bikini Bottom some time ago, the game’s darn funny. Even Jim and Connor, adults jaded by taxes, rent and the fact that adults cannot live in a pineapple under the sea (no matter how high house prices get) can find a healthy chuckle while exploring. The younger crowd still in that target audience are bound to have a blast, but you old folks watching alongside them are sure to be anything but bored.

Our video only shows off the first hour or so of the game and already it looks like a brilliant addition to any land lubber’s collection. You can buy it now on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox or PlayStation!
