CD Projekt has revealed Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have both been delayed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The two games are now due to be released during the first half of 2022 with Cyberpunk 2077 slated to arrive first.

The reason for the delay is to give both games more time “based on recommendations supplied by persons supervising development”. CD Projekt Red’s parent company had already hinted both games might be delayed out of their original 2021 window so the news comes as no surprise. The Witcher 3 received a rating for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S that suggested it would be released yesterday on those platforms, but that was clearly an old release window. Cyberpunk 2077 is now due to be released during the first quarter of 2022. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year Edition will follow during the second quarter of 2022, meaning both games will have released by the end of June.

Cyberpunk 2077 has been surrounded by controversy since its release. Many patches and hotfixes have been released to address some of the game’s issues, the latest of which fixed more quest-breaking bugs and optimised the GPU memory on PlayStation. The game has also received its first free DLC drop of a vehicle, an alternative appearance and two jackets. CD Projekt believes the game is now at a “satisfactory level” and large sections of the development team have moved on to other projects. Approximately a third of the team has been left to concentrate on the PS5 version of Cyberpunk 2077 while around a quarter of the team is developing its first big DLC expansion.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt fared much better upon release. CD Projekt has seen fit to leave the new-gen version of this game in the hands of Saber Interactive, who were responsible for the recently released Crysis Remastered Trilogy and World War Z: Aftermath. The reason why The Witcher 3 will be releasing after Cyberpunk 2077 could be because the developer also has Evil Dead: The Game due to be released in February.
