It looks like the first PS5 / PS6 cross-gen game has been confirmed by none other than publisher Square Enix. In a recent interview with Japanese publication 4Gamer, producer Yoshinori Kitase suggested that Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 will not be next-gen exclusive — a mistake its predecessor FFVII Rebirth made, which ultimately hurt its sales.

‘Rest assured,’ Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will be on PS5 and PS6

When FF7 Rebirth was confirmed as PS5 exclusive early on, many voiced criticism of the move despite PS4 posing development problems due to tech limitations. Rebirth released to positive reviews on the PS5, but Square Enix admitted that current-gen exclusivity had a role to play in the game’s lower-than-expected sales.

FF7 Remake released towards the end of the last gen, which meant that the game benefitted from PS4’s massive install base, so this does make sense. Now, Square Enix is looking to avoid making the same mistake.

When 4Gamer asked if Part 3 will be next-gen exclusive, Kitase laughed and said, “No, you can rest assured about the next one.” Director Naoki Hamaguchi chimed in by reiterating Square Enix’s stance on multiplatform releases going forward.

“As I said earlier, we will release future titles on a wide range of platforms so that more people can play them,” Hamaguchi said. “I can’t promise anything at this point, but we want many people to play the games we create, so we will do our best.”
