Sony is toying with the idea of adding a dedicated rewind button to PlayStation controllers in the future, if a patent filing is anything to go by. The application was submitted in early 2023, but was only just published on October 31, 2024.

Sony’s rationale for a rewind button on PlayStation controllers

As spotted by Tech4Gamers, Sony argues in its patent filing that allowing users to rewind during live gameplay will allow them to review important portions, should they need to. As an example, the company described a scenario in which players are given “important information” for a quest that they may have forgotten parts of.

“At some point during the live gameplay, the player may have forgotten portions of or all of the information, and may wish to revisit their recent gameplay,” the filing reads. “This may occur when the player decides to perform the quest later, and has forgotten certain details of the quest when the player ultimately tries to complete the quest.”

From the sound of things, the rewind button won’t allow players to replay parts of a game. It’s meant to allow players to only review captured frames.

Patents don’t always come to fruition, but I personally wouldn’t mind this feature on the PS6 controller. What do our readers think?
