Arguably the PS5 Pro‘s biggest obstacle was its large price tag. Selling for $699.99 here in the U.S., that is a big ask for a mid generation upgrade. However, if Japan sales are any indication, it seems gamers see the value of the new and improved console.

PS5 Pro exceeds PS4 Pro launch sales

According to Famitsu’s weekly sales figures between November 4 and November 10, 2024 (translated by Gematsu), the PS5 Pro’s launch week sales saw 78,086 units sold in Japan. As expected with a new hardware release, the console topped the hardware sales chart, followed by the Nintendo Switch OLED at 42,297 units and Nintendo Switch Lite at 16,140 units. For the rest of the PS5 family, the base model sold 8,571 units while the digital edition sold 1,503 units. Interestingly, PS4s are still selling a few units, with 49 sold.

It seems despite the large price, the PS5 Pro sales are off to a great start. The enhanced console also costs a bit more in Japan than it does here in the U.S., so it is somewhat plausible that its success may carry over to the States.

To give some context, these PS5 Pro sales actually exceed PS4 Pro’s debut sales when it launched in 2016. During its launch week, the PS4 Pro sold 65,194 units. This means the PS5 Pro sold over 10,000 more units than Sony’s previous mid generation upgrade.

Additionally, the PS5 Pro was the best selling console on Amazon in several countries including the U.S. and U.K back in October. Currently, it is ranked 17 in the overall video games category. The only console above it is the PS5 Slim at 15. If we count VR headsets, the Meta Quest 3S is ranked 8.

The PS5 Pro is readily available right now at a number of retailers. Its wide availability had scalpers selling the console at a loss.
