A new report by market research firm DFC Intelligence claims that PS6 and next-gen Xbox will “mightily struggle for a distant third place,” as there’s only room for two consoles in the next generation. Nintendo, analysts say, is in a strong position to remain number one.

PS6 has a “slight edge” over next-gen Xbox, according to research firm

In its ‘2024 Video Game Market Report and Forecast,’ DFC Intelligence claims that although the video game market is expected to grow and flourish beyond 2025, either Sony or Microsoft will fail to gain significant market share. The company stopped short of declaring a winner between the two, but did say that Sony has an advantage due to a “loyal base” and “strong IP.”

Nintendo is expected to be the “clear winner” because of lack of competition as well as early availability of the Switch successor. As for what will determine whether PS6 or next-gen Xbox will win, DFC Intelligence says whichever console launches first will have a major advantage, although price and features will also have a significant role to play.

DFC Intelligence also points out that Microsoft is now one of the biggest video game publishers, and may choose to focus on software and distribution rather than hardware in the next generation — something it’s already begun doing.
