Remedy Entertainment‘s Sam Lake has said that Alan Wake 2 will be its “best-looking, most beautiful” game ever by far, and there will be no compromises when it comes to its horror elements.

In an interview with IGN, Lake revealed that Remedy will use its Northlight engine for the upcoming title because its developers have a good grasp of it. “We feel that especially for this kind of experience where atmosphere and stylization are more important than ever before, is that we know Northlight so well we can focus on certain things and push certain things forward,” he explained.

Elsewhere in the interview, Lake said that Alan Wake 2‘s M rating means there will be no compromises or content censoring when it comes to the game’s horror elements. He called the rating “liberating.”

“For anything to do with Alan Wake the story is very central — this horror story,” Lake added. “Let’s do Remedy’s take on a survival horror game and focus on story… the horror story is this psychological, layered, deep mystery to dive into. And yes, it’s going to be scary. But it just works really really well with the gameplay.”

Remedy has previously said that players don’t need prior knowledge of the series to enjoy Alan Wake 2. The title is currently in development for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It’s expected to release sometime in 2023.
