In late December, Sega told investors that it will reconsider its NFT plans should it receive backlash from players like other companies, and if its NFTs are seen as merely a money-making scheme. Around the same time, the company filed two trademarks pertaining to NFTs, indicating that it’s ready to test the waters.

As spotted by Video Games Chronicle, one of the trademark applications is for “Sega NFT” and the other is for “Sega Classics NFT Collection.”

Sega NFTs might be similar to Konami NFTs

Sega Classics NFT Collection sounds similar to Konami Memorial NFT Collection, which saw the company auction off 14 pieces of Castlevania digital artwork to celebrate the series 35th anniversary. Konami’s NFT auction was a success, averaging around $12,000 a piece. Last Friday alone, Konami earned over $162,000 from its debut NFT scheme.

As far as “Sega NFT” trademark is concerned, it’s unclear what it’ll entail but it probably pertains to a more general company NFT scheme.

Opinion: Sega NFT trademarks aren’t a surprise

Zarmena writes… I was surprised to see headlines earlier this month claiming that Sega had dropped its NFT plans. That’s not what the company said. In fact, Sega said that it intended to go ahead with NFTs but was open to reconsidering things if nothing went according to plan. That includes any trouble with Japanese authorities. While I’m not thrilled to see the trademarks either, we all saw this coming.

In other news, The Artful Escape is headed to PS5 and PS4 soon, and Apex Legends is set to be enhanced for the PS5.
