Italian game publisher 505 Games, known for titles like Ghostrunner and the cloud version of Control on Switch, has made the decision to close offices in Germany, Spain, and France. This move, part of a larger “business review” by parent company Digital Bros, includes a planned layoff of 30 percent of employees. The decision to close European offices is in line with Digital Bros’ announcement from November, where they highlighted changes in consumer behavior towards gaming. With players showing a preference for established IPs and longer play times with familiar titles, 505 Games is adapting its business strategy to these shifting trends.

In a related development, Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind Alan Wake 2, has acquired full rights to the Control IP. This acquisition, valued at €17 million, includes rights to the original game, its sequel, and the multiplayer spinoff. The move by Remedy to secure the Control IP marks a significant step for the studio, allowing them complete control over the future of the franchise. This acquisition aligns with Remedy’s focus on creating narrative-driven, immersive experiences, as seen in their previous titles.

For 505 Games, the closure of European offices reflects a strategic response to the evolving gaming landscape. As players seek familiarity and longevity in their gaming experiences, publishers are adjusting their approaches to meet these demands.
