For the month before the 3DS and Wii U eShops close for new purchases on 27th March, each day we’re going to highlight a specific eShop game for one of those consoles and give a short pitch as to why we think it deserves your love and attention — before it’s too late. The chance to add these to your library will be gone for good soon and, for one reason or another, these eShop-exclusives are close to our hearts.

Today, Gavin gets that Friday feeling…

So, what’s it called again?

Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale.

Who made it?

This was a Level-5 release as part of its experimental Guild02 series, developed by Millennium Kitchen with Aquria.

What’s the premise?

Designer Kaz Ayabe of My Summer Vacation fame was given free reign to create a gorgeous, nostalgic tribute to long childhood summers. More specifically, it’s a lovely, light adventure that takes place in rural Toyko in the early ’70s.

You play as Sohto, a young boy who collects monster cards and spends his time exploring, collecting ‘glims’, playing card games with friends, solving light mysteries, and discussing the impending, titular attack.

Why should you play it?

Because it’s a great-looking, low-pressure, evocative little adventure that will give you the warm fuzzies if you’ve got any affection whatsoever for Kaiju culture or nostalgia for the disarming rural charm infused in many a Ghibli movie and games like Shin chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation (another Millennium Kitchen joint).

Also, if you haven’t been paying attention, it’s disappearing from sale in a matter of days and it’s 3DS platform-exclusive!

How much is it?

$7.99 / £7.19 / €7,99. Still not convinced? The lovely Felix-from-Nintendo-Life wants a word with you…

‘So why didn’t you save this one until Friday, Gavin? No-brainer tie-in there, mate!’ Look, we wanted to remind you earlier and give you an extra 24 hours, obviously! The Friday monsters attack on Friday night — you want to be prepared, not frantically downloading as the sun sets on the week, right?

We’ll be back soon with another 3DS or Wii U eShop recommendation as part of this ‘Countdown’ series. Let us know below if you’ve already got this in your collection and share your thoughts.
