Square Enix recently shed its western game development studios, with The Embracer Group acquiring legacy IP such as the Tomb Raider and The Legacy of Kain franchise. When the Japanese company dropped its western studios, rumours were abound that Sony was now interested in acquiring Square Enix Tokyo. Now the founder of Eidos Montreal, one of the western game development studios Square Enix Tokyo dropped, said in a new interview that has heard rumours that Sony is very interested in acquiring Square Enix Tokyo for franchises such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts etc. Square Enix has brought a number of JRPGs to the Switch including big franchises such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, along with new IP such as Triangle Strategy and Octopath Traveler, so it would be a blow if an acquisition eventually comes to light.
“If I read between the lines, Square Enix Japan was not as committed as we hoped initially. And there are rumours, obviously, that with all these activities of mergers and acquisitions, that Sony would really like to have Square Enix within their wheelhouse. I heard rumours that Sony said they’re really interested in Square Enix Tokyo, but not the rest. So, I think [Square Enix CEO Yosuke] Matsuda-san put it like a garage sale.”
