Solid Snake might not seem like he’s had much to do with Nintendo over the years, but his original outing in Metal Gear, crafted by Hideo Kojima, actually got ported to the Famicom in 1987. After this, he got a GBC, GameCube and 3DS release and also made an appearance in the Super Smash Bros. series.

With this in mind, Konami has now provided a sales data update on the Metal Gear series – announcing it has now sold 58 million copies worldwide as of 31st December 2021. The series has reportedly been able to shift around 900,000 copies since 31st March 2021, even though we haven’t seen a new game since the 2018 release, Metal Gear Survive.

While we would love to see Metal Gear make its way across to the Nintendo Switch, we won’t get our hopes up. In more recent times, Konami’s been more focused on selling NFTs of classic series like Castlevania. To be fair, it did also recently release Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel on the Switch recently, which has already been downloaded over 10 million times across all platforms.

There’s a Metal Gear movie on the way as well. It was announced in 2020. Oscar Isaac will play Snake, and the film will be directed by Kong: Skull Island director (Jordan Vogt-Roberts). How many Metal Gear games have you purchased over the years? Tell us down in the comments.
