In a recent interview in Japanese gaming magazine Weekly Famitsu, Super Mario Bros. Wonder director, Shiro Mouri, revealed a little more about the character choices. When it came to the loveable Yoshi they were originally going to include the egg throwing mechanic, which Yoshi has had in previous adventures. However, they felt that this wasn’t a good design choice for the game after prototyping it, so they went with the invincibility option, which both Nabbit and Yoshi have, meaning they don’t take hits from enemies though they can’t use the game’s power-ups.

“As for Yoshi’s actions, I thought it would be better if he could throw eggs, so we tried to create a prototype and test it. However, it became hard to control, and to let first-time-players have fun, we decided the current way was the best.”
