Well here we are folks. It’s the final week of January and we have had our first big Nintendo release of the year. Consider 2023 to be well and truly underway!

This week at Nintendo Life, we got all kinds of excited for the eventual release of GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo Switch Online N64 library and suggested a quick fix for those pesky controls. We also looked ahead to the year, running through the 9 questions we still have about Tears of the Kingdom and breaking down everything coming to Disney Dreamlight Valley in 2023.

In the world of reviews, we gave our thoughts on the point-and-click chiller The Excavation Of Hob’s Barrow and the breezy Super Mario Bros. 2-like Onion Assault (not a double bill that we’d race to recommend, but there’s something for everyone at least).

Some of our writers have now come together to share what gaming we will be getting up to in the post-Friday downtime. Have a read through our plans and then take to the comments to let us know what you’re up to this weekend!

It’s all about Persona 4: Golden for me this weekend. I’m obsessed! Persona 4 is borderline perfection and I think I prefer it to Persona 5. The latest entry goes pretty hard on the tough subjects straight away, but Persona 4 honestly feels a little bit more lighthearted, which is nice (okay, there’s still the issue of a serial killer making their way through Inaba, but still…).

I might play some GoldenEye if I’ve got time, but I will likely opt for the Xbox version (I’m sorry!) simply due to the absurd hoops you need to jump through in order to get the controls on point with the Switch. I had also planned on getting the Dead Space remake, which I definitely will do eventually, but £70 for a near 1:1 remake? Nah, you’re alright. I’ll wait until it’s on sale.

Last week I said I was gonna get back into Stardew Valley, and that’s true, I did, I have, I am. I missed out on a lot of the 1.5 stuff, so I just unlocked Ginger Island at last and now I’m getting to find out what all the fuss is about. I also played a lot of Dome Keeper this week, which I really enjoyed, but you run out of stuff to do really quickly, so I probably won’t go back to it.

This weekend will all be about Fire Emblem Engage for me. I had only really dabbled in the franchise before the wonderful Switch entires of this and Three Houses, but those two games later I am well and truly a convert. I am playing on Classic Mode (the way it should be) and suffered a devastating loss of three of my faves this week, so the weekend will all be about finding new fighters to plug that hole in my heart.

I also couldn’t claim that I will last the whole weekend without at least having a little go at Goldeneye 007. I was a literal child when I last played this one and my FPS skills have only decreased since then so I can’t imagine that this will be racking up huge amounts of playtime, but it’s worth a shot at least.

Confession time: I never really stopped playing GoldenEye 007 (I’m probably not alone). To this day, I still boot up this N64 classic at least a few times a year. I’ve even got my fix from mods like GoldenEye: Source and certain other versions over the years. So yeah – I’m pretty addicted! With this in mind, I’ll absolutely be using the Switch Online release as an excuse to revisit Rare’s iconic FPS this weekend. It’s hard to believe this title has finally made it out of licensing hell and that’s why I plan to take full advantage of this historic moment by also playing the Xbox version as well. Replaying the game on a Nintendo handheld is a bit mindblowing come to think of it, but it has been 25+ years since the original release. Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

We hope you enjoyed reading! Add the game that you’ll be maining in the poll below and leave a comment with your gaming plans for the weekend ahead!
