Unity’s CEO and President, John Riccitiello, has stepped down in the aftermath of the company’s controversial policy regarding runtime fees. The policy, which charged developers fees based on how often games using the Unity engine were installed, drew significant backlash from the developer community. James M. Whitehurst has assumed the role of interim CEO and President while Unity seeks a permanent replacement for Riccitiello. Roelof Botha, the lead independent Unity board director, has been appointed chairman.

Whitehurst expressed confidence in Unity’s future and its ability to continue growing its platform and community. Riccitiello, who served as Unity’s CEO for nearly a decade, expressed gratitude for his time with the company. Unity’s recent policy change led to criticism from developers, with some considering alternatives to the Unity engine for future projects. Unity eventually apologized for the policy and restructured its pricing.

While the timing of Riccitiello’s departure may be coincidental, it comes shortly after the policy controversy. Additionally, Riccitiello had sold 2,000 shares in Unity before the policy announcement, adding to the speculation surrounding his departure.
